The collection of case-studies authored by Hastedt, Lybecker, and Shannon provides an excellent overview of key issues in contemporary international relations. It contains a number of classic case-studies such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Iranian nuclear programme, the War in Iraq, the integration of Europe and several other case-studies which are also present in other similar textbooks. However, this book also introduces a number of case-studies that are new and, thus, are not available in other textbooks. These include food aid as solution to world hunger, Haiti earthquake, BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Libya uprising, and Arctic governance. These cases bring a real added value to this book. All these case-studies are clearly structured, and each case-study introduces a separate theoretical concept. All cases are discussed through the lens of conflict and cooperation. This textbook is a valuable addition to the course "Global agenda" that I teach during the spring semester.
